Terms of Use

Welcome to Umami! These Terms of Use ("Terms") govern your use of the Umami platform, including our mobile apps (UmamiFinder and UmamiKitchens) and website (findumami.com). By using Umami, you agree to these Terms. If you don't agree, please don't use our services — but we'll miss you at the table.

1. Eligibility

Umami is designed for food lovers aged 18 and older. By creating an account, you confirm that you are at least 18 years old. We do not knowingly allow minors to use our services.

2. Your Account

When you create an Umami account, you agree to:

• Provide accurate and truthful information
• Keep your login credentials secure and confidential
• Notify us promptly if you suspect unauthorized access to your account
• Take responsibility for all activity that occurs under your account

You may sign up using email/password, Google Sign-In, or Apple Sign-In. You can have only one account per person.

3. What You Can Do on Umami

Umami lets you:

• Discover, rate, and review individual dishes at restaurants
• Browse restaurants, view menus, and explore cuisines
• Build your personal eating history and Eating Map
• Create and share curated dish and restaurant lists
• Connect with other food lovers through Your Table, Groupers, and Fellow Eaters
• Earn points, badges, and status levels as you explore
• Participate in restaurant loyalty programs and redeem rewards
• Use AI features like the Magic Food Processor and avatar generation

4. Your Content

You retain ownership of the content you create on Umami — your reviews, photos, lists, and other contributions are yours. However, by posting content, you grant Umami a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to use, display, distribute, and reproduce your content within the Umami platform and for promotional purposes.

You agree that your content:

• Is accurate and reflects your genuine experience
• Does not infringe on anyone else's intellectual property rights
• Does not contain offensive, defamatory, or illegal material
• May be analyzed by AI for content moderation and food identification

We reserve the right to remove content that violates these Terms, and we use both automated AI moderation and human review to maintain community standards.

5. Prohibited Conduct

To keep Umami a welcoming and trustworthy community, you agree not to:

• Post fake, misleading, or paid reviews without disclosure
• Harass, bully, or intimidate other users
• Spam, advertise, or solicit without authorization
• Upload content that is obscene, violent, or illegal
• Impersonate another person or entity
• Attempt to manipulate the points, badges, or status system
• Use automated tools to scrape data or create accounts
• Reverse-engineer, decompile, or tamper with the app
• Interfere with the security or performance of our services

6. Points, Badges & Gamification

Umami's gamification system — including points, badges, status levels, and FoodFetti celebrations — is designed to make your food journey more fun. Please note:

• Points, badges, and status levels have no monetary value and cannot be exchanged for cash
• We may adjust, recalculate, or reset points and levels at any time to maintain fairness
• Rewards and coupons from restaurant partners are subject to the terms set by each restaurant
• Gamification features may change as we improve the platform

7. AI Features & Disclaimers

Umami uses artificial intelligence in several ways:

• Photo analysis: AI identifies food in your photos, moderates content, and extracts ingredient information. Results are approximate — AI can sometimes mistake a croissant for a crescent roll.
• Avatar generation: Your unique food-character avatar is generated by AI from text prompts. No personal photos are used in this process.
• Recommendations: Dish suggestions are based on your taste profile, location, weather, and community trends. These are suggestions, not guarantees of quality or availability.

AI-generated content and recommendations are provided "as is." We strive for accuracy but cannot guarantee it.

8. Restaurant Information

Restaurant details on Umami come from multiple sources including Google Places, community contributions, and our data team. While we work to keep information accurate:

• We do not guarantee the accuracy of restaurant hours, menus, prices, or availability
• Menu items, prices, and availability may change without notice
• Always confirm details directly with the restaurant for time-sensitive decisions
• Dietary and allergen information should be verified with the restaurant

9. Intellectual Property

The Umami brand, logo, app design, custom food illustrations, icon system, and all original content are the intellectual property of Konnecturs LDA. You may not copy, modify, distribute, or create derivative works from our intellectual property without written permission.

The Umami name, UmamiFinder, UmamiKitchens, and associated branding elements are trademarks of Konnecturs LDA.

10. Limitation of Liability

Umami is provided "as is" and "as available." To the fullest extent permitted by law:

• We are not responsible for any food-related decisions you make based on information in the app
• We are not liable for the quality, safety, or accuracy of restaurant offerings
• We are not responsible for interactions between users
• Our total liability to you for any claims arising from your use of Umami shall not exceed the amount you paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim (which, since Umami is currently free, would be zero)

11. Account Suspension & Termination

We may suspend or terminate your account if you:

• Violate these Terms
• Engage in fraudulent or harmful activity
• Are reported by multiple users for community guidelines violations

You can delete your account at any time through the app's privacy settings. Upon deletion, your personal data will be removed in accordance with our Privacy Policy.

12. Dispute Resolution

These Terms are governed by the laws of Portugal and the European Union. Any disputes arising from these Terms or your use of Umami shall be resolved in the courts of Lisbon, Portugal. Before filing any claim, we encourage you to contact us directly — most issues can be resolved over a friendly conversation (preferably over good food).

13. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. When we make significant changes, we will notify you through the app or by email. Continuing to use Umami after changes take effect means you accept the updated Terms.
